Building, Zoning, Well and Septic Jurisdiction

Olmsted County is comprised of 18 townships and eight cities which all operate differently in terms of how they administer their zoning ordinances and the state building code.

The responsibility for building permits, zoning, well and septic oversight, and subdivision administration varies by township and city within Olmsted County. Because each area may work with different agencies, the information you need—such as property history, zoning details, or permitting records—may come from different sources depending on where the property is located.

To quickly identify the correct contacts for your project or questions, use our Planning, Building, Well, and Septic Jurisdiction Lookup Tool. Simply enter the site address to view the appropriate contacts for building permits, inspections, planning and zoning, well permitting, septic permitting, and more.

Please contact the Olmsted County Planning Department at 507-328-7100 for assistance with this search tool, or you can use the instructions below.
