Note from Sheriff Torgerson

Once again, the April 2026 awards night and swearing in ceremony left me feeling so very proud of the people who work for the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office, their families, and our communities. Oh, what a night! And in the words from the title song of the hit movie The Greatest Showman, sing it with me, now… “this is the greatest show!!”

This month we are saying goodbye to another essential staff member who when her position was created many years ago, she came into a foreign environment but quickly we all discovered the value she could bring to our office and eventually public safety in SE region of Minnesota and the State. Judy Indrelie was a vital asset to the region as the ARMER (public safety radio) system was built out from the Metro area by MNDOT in the 90’s and early 2000’s building a network of radio systems county by county that are commonplace now. Her ability to navigate and secure grant funds for law enforcement, fire, and EMS initially spread to our entire county where in a disaster or critical incident event every county department and office can be on the same channel. Seeking federal and state funds was key in the build out. And amid her work with budgeting for our office and the radio work after 9/11 more money became available to enhance local Homeland Security and Emergency Management. She stayed on top of it all with audits and reporting to the feds and state officials, so no dollars were unwisely or inappropriately spent. And all equipment was accounted for. Seems simple but Judy’s dedication to the cause was noteworthy.

I could go on and on about Judy as a co-worker and trusted friend but let’s leave it this way. Judy your are one of a kind and you will be missed. Enjoy your retirement, the grandkids, and time relaxing away from the numbers, audits, timelines, and endless spreadsheets!

Judy Indrelie Retirement

Chief Deputy James Schueller

It is with both gratitude and sadness that the Sheriff’s Office announces the retirement of Judy Indrelie. Judy’s final day with Olmsted County will be May 1, 2026, concluding more than three decades of dedicated public service.

Judy began her career with Olmsted County in May 1995 in the Finance Department, where she provided financial support to the Sheriff’s Office. In January 2008, she transitioned into a role dedicated specifically to the Sheriff’s Office, serving first as a Special Projects Coordinator and most recently as Regional Programs Manager. In her time, Judy has worked with four different Sheriffs, six Chief Deputies, and numerous other staff.

Throughout her near 31 years of service, Judy has been an invaluable resource to both the Sheriff’s Office and Olmsted County. Her extensive knowledge, steady guidance, and unwavering commitment to public service helped lead our office through numerous budget processes and ensured the effective management and oversight of critical grant programs. She also represented the Sheriff’s Office on several regional boards, including the Southeast Minnesota Emergency Communications Board and the Region 1 Emergency Management Board, among many other responsibilities.

In speaking with Judy, she said that as a civilian, she didn’t know what to expect when assigned to the Sheriff’s Office but remembers how warm staff was to her when she came. “I was able to take my accounting skills and apply them in a brand-new position where I was able to support both senior command and line staff. I enjoyed being part of the relationship with Finance and the Sheriff’s Office. I was able to grow professionally and feel like I’ve made a difference; It was a perfect fit for me. My job has been wonderful, and it’s been a great place to work. I’ve built lots of friendships.” When asked about a favorite memory, Judy mentioned when they used to do ‘office lunches’ and further stated “You don’t fully know what goes on until you experience it; it’s a family.”

“It’s been my motto since I started…teamwork. It takes all of us to work together to accomplish any goals we have for ourselves and the office. Every rank, every word written, every call taken, every decision made is all about teamwork.  What one person can do, a team can do better.  Thoughts, ideas, disagreements, unity just makes it better.”

When asked if she had any advice for others, Judy said “Bank your time for important things, put money away, and be open to new ideas and challenges.” My last question for Judy was what her retirement plans were, and she said, “Traveling with my husband and grandbabies!”

Judy’s contributions have left a lasting impact on our organization, our staff, and the citizens we serve. Her professionalism, dedication, and leadership were an integral part of our office. Equally important, her warm smile, positive outlook, and “Let’s get it done!” attitude have helped foster a supportive and productive workplace culture. Judy made many of us better in the process.

Please join us in thanking Judy for her many years of service to Olmsted County and in wishing her all the best in her well-deserved retirement. You will be greatly missed.
