TZD Tuesday - Be a Role Model for Safe Driving this Holiday Season
The holiday season is officially here, bringing the excitement and stress of celebrating with friends and family. Whether you're traveling across the country or sticking close to home, please remember the importance of making safe choices every time you get behind the wheel, and encourage your loved ones to do the same.
Use and share these tips to help everyone get to their destination safely.
- Plan Ahead: If your holiday plans include alcohol, commit to a non-drinking designated driver or arrange for a ride-share service before you start celebrating. Never drive impaired—it’s not worth the risk.
- Remember: In addition to alcohol, substances ranging from cannabis and hemp-derived THC products to prescription medications and sleep aids can also affect safe driving abilities.
- Prioritize Rest: Fatigue can be just as dangerous as impairment. If you are driving long distances, ensure you get sufficient rest beforehand and plan short breaks every few hours during your trip.
- Buckle Up, Every Trip: Ensure everyone in your vehicle is correctly wearing a seat belt or child restraint, no matter how short the drive. Buckling up is your best defense in case of a crash.
- Eliminate Distractions: Silence your phone and place it out of reach. Focus 100 percent of your attention on the road.
- Extra Impaired Driving Enforcement will be on Minnesota roads over the holiday season. It begins the day before Thanksgiving and runs every weekend through New Year’s Eve.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving holiday. Please make the commitment to be a role model for safe driving, which helps protect you, and those who share the road with you. Together, we can drive Minnesota toward zero deaths.
