TZD Tuesday: Be Irish, Be Smart – Plan a Sober Ride This St. Patrick’s Day

Your St. Patrick’s Day fun might include celebrating with shamrocks and green beer, but it’s important to remember that if you’re planning to raise a glass, you’re not planning to get behind the wheel.

The Reality on Our Roads:

  • Most Minnesotans don’t drive impaired – but those who do put lives at risk.
  • From 2019-2024, there were 97 alcohol-related crashes over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.
  • 10 of those crashes were fatal – and each was preventable.
  • Impairment isn’t just about alcohol – cannabis, prescription medications and other substances can also slow reaction time and decision-making behind the wheel.

Make a Commitment to Drive Sober:

  • Plan ahead – designate a driver, use a rideshare service or stay where you are.
  • Speak up – if a friend plans to drive impaired, step in and help them find a safe ride.
  • Buckle up – it’s your best protection against impaired drivers.
  • If you see an impaired driver, call 911 with location and plate details.

Let’s keep the roads safe for everyone this St. Patrick’s Day. If you’re drinking, join the majority who celebrate responsibly by planning a safe way to get home. Together, we can drive Minnesota toward zero deaths.
