Cover and Secure Loads
A fee of $20 will be charged to unsecured/uncovered loads.
Check your load before you get on the road!
To prevent any of its load from dropping, sifting, leaking, blowing, or otherwise escaping, loads must be covered and secured. According to Minnesota Statute 169.81 a vehicle must not be driven or moved on any highway unless the load is securely strapped or covered.
Tips for a safe load
Always make sure nothing can fly out by:
- Placing lighter items at the bottom
- Tying down with ropes, bungee cords or straps
- Covering the entire load with a sturdy tarp
- Not overloading
- Double-checking after you have traveled for a time
Did you know:
- A 20-pound item at 55 mph has a force of 1,000 pounds at impact!
- Adopt A Highway volunteers on Minnesota state roads picked up 35,957 bags of trash in 2018. That is a lot of trash!
- At least 45% of roadside litter occurs when trash blows out of uncovered trucks or falls off unsecured loads!
