Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson announces retirement

Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson has announced his retirement, sharing that he will not seek a fourth term in the 2026 election. His current term will conclude in January 2027, marking the end of a distinguished law enforcement career spanning more than four decades. 

Sheriff Torgerson began his law enforcement career in 1980 with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office. He joined the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office in January 1986 and has since held numerous roles that shaped public safety in the region. 

As a deputy, Torgerson served primarily in the Patrol Division and became Olmsted County’s first School Liaison Officer, teaching the DARE program to local students. He was also a member of the Emergency Response Unit.  Over the years, he advanced through supervisory positions, including Sergeant and Captain, before overseeing Homeland Security and Emergency Management in 2009. 

In January 2015, Torgerson was sworn in as the 26th Olmsted County Sheriff. Under his leadership, the Sheriff’s Office strengthened partnerships with local businesses, elected officials, and public safety agencies to ensure the highest level of service and safety for residents and visitors. His tenure has been marked by a focus on collaboration, innovation, and community trust. 

Throughout his career, Sheriff Torgerson also demonstrated a strong commitment to community engagement by 

  • Directing the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.  
  • Organizing the Polar Bear Plunge. 
  • Serving on the Minnesota Law Enforcement Torch Run Executive Council.  

Reflecting on his decision, Sheriff Torgerson expressed deep gratitude to the residents of Olmsted County for their trust and support.  

“It has been an absolute pleasure and honor to serve the citizens of Olmsted County,” he said. “I’ve had the privilege of working alongside the finest people and partnering with dedicated public safety professionals across the county and the state.” 

As Sheriff Torgerson prepares for his final year in office, he remains committed to leading the department and serving the community with the same dedication that has defined his career.
