Celebrate 75 years of Minnesota wildlife management areas at August 20 Rock Dell WMA open house
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources invites the public to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Minnesota's wildlife management area (WMA) system! Stop by the Rock Dell WMA near Rochester for a family-friendly, drive-along tour. This free open house will take place on Thursday, August 20, 2026, from 4-7 p.m.
Visitors will travel in their own vehicles along a self-guided tour route and stop at stations featuring interactive displays and hands-on activities. Explore prairie and oak savanna restoration projects, discover how agricultural fields are transformed into native prairie, and see the equipment, tools, and techniques used by DNR land managers.
Participants will also learn about the history and importance of Minnesota’s WMAs. Minnesota’s WMA system includes 1,521 public wildlife areas covering 1.39 million acres across the state. Established to conserve wildlife habitat while providing public recreation opportunities, WMAs are enjoyed by hunters, hikers, birders, trappers, and other outdoor enthusiasts.
Rock Dell WMA encompasses nearly 490 acres of grasslands, woodlands, and about two miles of the Zumbro River. The area provides habitat for deer, turkey, pheasants, waterfowl, and many other wildlife species. Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation for these remarkable landscapes and receive commemorative 75th anniversary giveaways.
