Construction progressing on materials recovery facility
October 2026 construction update
Olmsted County’s materials recovery facility, or MRF, is continuing to take shape as construction has now entered its seventh month. Through this MRF, recyclables will be sorted so they can be reused instead of thrown away. The MRF will help our community recycle more, keep reusable materials out of the landfill, and support a cleaner environment.
Site and foundation work
This past month, crews finished building the outside walls and the walls around the main unloading area. They also poured large sections of concrete flooring and completed the foundation for the baler, which will compact recyclable materials.
Workers prepared gravel roads and added the first layer of asphalt for future roads and parking areas. Foundations for fire safety equipment and air compressors were also installed. The stormwater pond is now complete.
Building construction
The steel building structure began going up in late October 2026, and crews continued assembling the building frame.
Other work completed
- Finished installing the outside walls
- Poured major sections of the concrete floor
- Installed underground electrical lines
MRF equipment progress
Design and fabrication of the sorting equipment is underway. The equipment contract was signed in September 2026, marking an important step toward preparing the facility for future recycling operations.
Looking ahead
Building construction will continue into November 2026, and more interior work will begin as the structure takes shape. The project remains on schedule with commercial operations expected to begin in September 2027.
Olmsted County will continue to share updates as progress continues.
