Permanent absentee voter status update

  • News
  • May 28, 2024

Beginning June 1, 2024, Minnesota will introduce a permanent absentee voter list. This replaces the current process where voters with permanent absentee voter status receive an absentee ballot application in the mail for each election.

Key features of the update include:

Automated absentee ballot distribution

  • Voters with permanent absentee voter status will automatically be sent an absentee ballot. If you are unsure whether you currently have permanent absentee voter status, please email or call the Olmsted County Elections Office at 507-328-7650.

Participation option on voter registration

  • Starting June 1, the voter registration application will include an option for voters to indicate their preference for joining the permanent absentee voter list. If you are already registered to vote, you will need to update your voter registration if you would like to have permanent absentee voter status.

Absentee ballots will be mailed to permanent absentee voters 46 days before each regularly scheduled primary and General Election and each special primary and special election.

Are you registered to vote?

If you would like to know if you are already registered to vote in Minnesota, please visit the Minnesota Secretary of State website. You can also register to vote or update your registration online.
