Community feedback shaping the future of Olmsted County parks
Last summer and fall, the Olmsted County Parks and Trails team asked residents and visitors what they enjoy about our parks and what changes they would like to see. This input will guide updates to the master plans for the parks, which will be finished by the end of 2026.
From June through October 2025, the county collected public input through an online survey, open houses, and community events. More than 800 people responded to the survey and dozens attended open houses. The Parks and Trails department also partnered with the Mobilizing Olmsted Voices for Equity (M.O.V.E) Community Council to ensure inclusive participation.
Throughout the community engagement process, community members emphasized:
- Nature-based recreation: Strong support for hiking, biking, and protecting natural areas.
- Expanded amenities: Interest in nighttime activities (like stargazing), mountain biking trails, disc golf, and water-based recreation.
- Dog-friendly spaces: Requests for more trails for dogs and better leash enforcement.
- Accessibility and inclusivity: Requests for paved paths, family-friendly features, and spaces for people with different needs.
“The community’s voice is shaping the future of our parks,” said Olmsted County Parks and Trails Director Karlin Ziegler. “People value natural spaces and want to enjoy them in ways that fit their lifestyles.”
The Parks and Trails department will now begin updating its master plans to reflect these priorities.
“This feedback is critical as we plan for the future,” Ziegler added. “We want to balance conservation with recreation. We also want to ensure our parks remain welcoming, sustainable, and enjoyable for everyone.”
Olmsted County Parks and Trails will present the updated master plans to the Olmsted County Parks and Trails Commission and the Olmsted County Board of Commissioners for approval in late 2026. Once approved and finalized, the plans will then be posted on the Parks and Trails webpage.
The public will have another opportunity to provide input this summer when the Parks and Trails team seeks feedback to develop its first trails master plan. Feedback will be gathered through surveys, participation at local events, and conversations with community partners. More details on how the community can get involved will be shared as soon as it is available.
