Trailside Apartments to serve seniors with affordable housing in Olmsted County
September 22, 2025
Olmsted County celebrated the ribbon-cutting and grand opening of Trailside Apartments, located at 1001 Mayowood Road SW in Rochester, on September 22, 2025. The new development provides 36 affordable rental units for individuals aged 55 and older.
The $12.8 million project was made possible through a combination of federal and state funding, along with support from Olmsted County, the Olmsted County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA), the City of Rochester, and the Coalition for Rochester Area Housing.
Monthly rent for Trailside Apartments is intentionally set below market rates. All tenants will pay 30 percent of their income in rent, allowing them to have affordable housing that meets their needs.
“Trailside Apartments is a testament to what we can accomplish when we come together with a shared purpose,” said Olmsted County Housing Director David Dunn. “This development reflects our commitment to creating inclusive, sustainable housing that supports older adults and strengthens our community.”
“Trailside Apartments not only provides a place to live, but it also fosters a sense of belonging, dignity, and security for older adults who may otherwise face housing instability,” said Olmsted County Commissioner Mark Thein.
With 30 one-bedroom and 6 two-bedroom units, Trailside Apartments offers a variety of thoughtfully designed floor plans. Each floor plan was planned to ensure accessibility, comfort, and independence for all residents. Units include standard appliances such as a stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher.
Residents will enjoy convenient amenities including laundry facilities on each floor and elevator access to all levels. The apartment building also features a welcoming community room with public Wi-Fi, casual seating, and space for group activities and events. Outdoor patios offer multiple seating areas with scenic views of the Zumbro River. Residents will also have direct access to the Rochester trail system and nearby community gardens to enhance outdoor living.
Trailside Apartments also reflects a commitment to sustainability. It features rooftop solar panels and a geothermal heating and cooling system to help reduce utility costs.
As Trailside Apartments welcomes its first residents on September 28, 2025, Olmsted County reaffirms its dedication to housing solutions that prioritize people, promote equity, and strengthen neighborhoods.
