Regional transportation meeting highlights local projects and transportation needs
Transportation leaders, legislators, and community partners gathered Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the Rochester International Event Center for a regional transportation meeting hosted by the Transportation Alliance, focused on current projects, future needs, and the importance of continued investment in the region’s transportation system.
Olmsted County Public Works Director Ben Johnson provided an update on several major county transportation projects, including planned interchanges along the Trunk Highway 14 corridor near Byron. Olmsted County is working with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and the City of Byron on interchanges at County State Aid Highways (CSAH) 3 and 5. Thanks to funding from the 2026 state legislature, congressionally directed spending and the Corridors of Commerce program, preliminary design and environmental work for the projects is expected to begin in fall of 2026.
Johnson also highlighted local road and bridge needs, including a planned reconstruction project on County State Aid Highway 1 southeast of Rochester and the CSAH 3 bridge replacement project south of Pine Island. More than 200 local bridges in MnDOT District 6 are eligible for replacement, underscoring the need for continued transportation funding.
The meeting also featured updates from local transportation leaders from MnDOT, City of Rochester, and other regional transportation services. A panel discussion with legislators and candidates followed the transportation updates.
“There’s a lot of need out there. We’re very appreciative of the funding we’ve received, but continued investment is critical to keeping our local transportation system safe, reliable, and effective for the communities we serve,” Johnson said.
The projects discussed at the meeting highlight the regional importance of transportation infrastructure and the continued need for state and federal investment to support a safe and effective transportation system.
