Standing up for vulnerable adults this June
Olmsted County observes Vulnerable Adult Abuse Awareness Month in June to reinforce our community’s commitment to protecting vulnerable adults. Abuse can be physical, emotional/mental, financial, or related to neglect, and it often goes unreported. Staying informed and proactive is one of the most effective ways to prevent harm.
Types of abuse include physical, emotional/mental, neglect, and financial exploitation or scams. Warning signs may involve sudden behavior changes, unexplained injuries, isolation, missing money or belongings, or unmet medical or daily needs.
Anyone can report suspected maltreatment, and reports can be made anonymously.
Local adult protective services teams work closely with law enforcement when needed, balancing safety with everyone’s right to make their own decisions.
How you can make a difference
Staying informed and proactive is one of the most effective ways to prevent harm to vulnerable adults. This June, Olmsted County is displaying reminders on the Graham Park digital billboards, encouraging residents to:
- Stay alert to changes in your loved ones’ physical, emotional, and financial well-being.
- Watch for scams. Never pay with gift cards, wire transfers, or unfamiliar online methods.
- If you see something concerning, speak up.
