Empowering youth outdoors: Child and Family Services relaunches summer fishing camps
Olmsted County Child and Family Services Youth Behavioral Health (YBH) has officially relaunched its beloved summer fishing camps—an outdoor experience designed to help youth build confidence, learn new skills, and gain the mental health benefits of time in nature.
The program is already underway, with the first camp session successfully completed in June. Youth had the opportunity to practice fishing skills, enjoy time outdoors, and receive individualized support from YBH staff at a local fishing spot.
YBH currently provides voluntary children’s mental health case management for 165 Olmsted County youth diagnosed with severe mental illnesses. Each youth has individualized goals focused on building skills, fostering social connections, and discovering activities they enjoy. Outdoor experiences can play a powerful role in this process. Research shows that time in nature can improve mood, reduce anxiety, and support cognitive functioning. Fishing offers an accessible, calming way for youth to explore these benefits.
This summer’s fishing camps introduce youth to water safety, basic fishing techniques, and the understanding that outdoor recreation is available right in their own community. By choosing familiar, local fishing spots, YBH hopes to help youth feel confident continuing these activities independently or with their families.
Fishing camps are not new to YBH—similar sessions were offered from 2008 to 2016. Thanks to grant support from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR), the program has now returned with reusable equipment that will sustain it for years to come. The camps are offered specifically to youth engaged in YBH case management, allowing staff to tailor guidance and support to each participant’s needs.
Sessions will run throughout June, July, and August, with each camp hosting 8–10 youth and offering one on one adult support to ensure safety, encouragement, and a positive experience.
The successful relaunch of the camps reflects a true team effort across YBH. Staff contributed their expertise, planning, and commitment to youth development—efforts that ensure each camp is well organized and meaningful for participants.
YBH is grateful for the MN DNR’s investment in youth access to nature-based activities. In addition to grant support, YBH is seeking partnerships with local sports clubs, outdoor groups, and community organizations that wish to help expand outdoor opportunities for youth. Community partners interested in supporting the camps or contributing outdoor expertise are encouraged to contact YBH for more information.
