Olmsted County Environmental Resources
Environmental Resources focuses on providing a proper place for waste in Olmsted County. The department oversees several facilities in the county, including the Kalmar Landfill, Waste-to-Energy Facility, Recycling Center Plus, Hazardous Waste Facility, and the compost site. Using the motto, “There’s a Proper Place for Your Waste,” Environmental Resources aims to help the public dispose of waste in an environmentally friendly way.
Waste Wizard tool
Did you know the Olmsted County website has a Waste Wizard tool? Check it out! It’s a great resource to help you find the right disposal option for your waste.
Future materials recovery facility
In May 2023, the Minnesota legislature approved $10 million toward the construction of a materials recovery facility (MRF). MRFs remove recyclable and noncombustible materials from the waste stream to increase recycling. This MRF will grow Olmsted County’s waste management system and delay the need to expand the Waste-to-Energy Facility. If you want to learn more about the future MRF at Olmsted County, speak to our Environmental Resources representatives at Thursdays Downtown on August 10.
