Olmsted County offices closed Monday, June 19, 2023
Olmsted County offices will be closed Monday, June 19, 2023, in observance of Juneteenth. Regular business hours will resume Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Texas to announce the end of the Civil War and the end of slavery about two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863. For decades, activists and legislators advocated for national observances of the holiday, and in 2021, Juneteenth was made a federal holiday. Juneteenth was adopted in celebration and in memory of the day all Americans became free.
