Olmsted County recognizing Juneteenth

  • News
  • Jun 15, 2022
Juneteenth

On Sunday, June 19, 2022, people across the United States will recognize Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce the end of the Civil War and slavery. Most know the official abolition of slavery as President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863; however, slaves in Texas did not receive word that slavery had been abolished until two and a half years later. Juneteenth is celebrated in memory of the day all Americans became free.

This year, Olmsted County will recognize Juneteenth as an employee holiday. Since Juneteenth falls on a Sunday, Olmsted County will observe the day on Monday, June 20, 2022.
