Disposal options - Garbage and Recycling

Hire a licensed waste hauler

Olmsted County efficiently manages garbage and recycling disposal through streamlined processes outlined in the Designated Waste and Solid Waste Management ordinances. These regulations cover self-hauler procedures, hauler licensing, and registration. With a focus on safeguarding public health, welfare, and the integrated waste management system, the county oversees solid waste activities, addressing health threats and enhancing the management of Mixed Municipal Solid Waste through comprehensive services. In addition, Olmsted County is committed to educating, ensuring compliance, and relieving waste generators by assuming non-hazardous waste titles, thereby mitigating long-term financial and environmental risks.

Below are various waste disposal options and information on the environmental service charge.


Class A Hauler

A Class A License is required in Olmsted County for Commercial Haulers to provide Hauler Services for MMSW, Industrial Waste, Recyclable Materials, Source Separated Organic Materials, Construction Debris, Demolition Debris, or Infectious Waste. 

Only licensed Class A Haulers listed below can operate within Olmsted County. If you have been contacted by or have hired a hauler not included in the list below, please contact Olmsted County as soon as you can at 507-328-7070.

A Class B License is required in Olmsted County for Commercial Haulers to provide Collection and transportation of Source Separated Organic Materials only.

Class C Hauler

A Class C License is required in Olmsted County for Commercial Haulers to provide Hauler Services utilizing roll-off trucks hauling roll-off containers (“open top”), roll-off trailers, and compactor boxes for MSW, Industrial Waste, Recyclable Materials, Source Separated Organic Materials, Construction Debris, Demolition Debris, and Infectious Waste.

Class D Hauler

A Class D License is required in Olmsted County for Persons providing Collection and transportation of Bulky Items and Solid Waste as an adjunct secondary service to a primary service providing labor or general site cleanup services. 

Class D Haulers are not licensed to provide weekly garbage collection and transportation services.

Any entity or individual offering junk hauling services within Olmsted County must hold a valid license for operation. If you encounter or employ a hauler for waste removal within the county boundaries and they are not included in the authorized list provided, please get in touch with us at 507-328-7070. Your cooperation ensures compliance with licensing regulations and helps maintain the integrity of waste management services in Olmsted County.

*Engaging in the services of an unlicensed junk hauler could expose you to potential liabilities or legal repercussions if the hauler fails to dispose of your waste properly.

Environmental service charge information

Garbage haulers in Olmsted County offer collection services with volume-based fees (meaning the more you throw away, the more you pay). Reusing and recycling can reduce waste and save resources. All Class A Haulers are required to offer recycling collection services to their customers.

All garbage haulers must also collect an Environmental Service Charge from their customers to help fund Olmsted County environmental education and waste abatement activities.

Self-Haul to the Recycling Center Plus

A Self-Hauler is a generator that does not contract with a Class A, Class B, or Class C Licensed Hauler but instead collects and transports their own solid waste to the Recycling Center Plus for disposal. A Self-Hauler shall not provide collection and transportation services to someone else for compensation. 

If you have questions regarding self-hauling, please call Olmsted County at 507-328-7070. 

The following recyclable materials are accepted free of charge but must be pre-sorted:

  • Aluminum cans
  • Clear glass bottles and jars (no window glass, dishware, or ceramics)
  • Colored glass bottles and jars: green, brown, and other colors (no window glass, dishware, or ceramics)
  • Corrugated cardboard (clean only) - remove packaging materials
  • White office paper
  • Newspaper, magazines, flyers/pamphlets, colored paper
  • Paperboard boxes (flattened - no freezer boxes), e.g., cereal & cracker boxes
  • Plastic bottles and containers #1, #2 and #5  
  • Tin/steel food cans
  • Clean scrap iron, aluminum, copper, brass, and stainless steel

Styrofoam is not accepted in the recycling area at the facility; it is garbage. 

Items commonly accepted for a fee at the Recycling Center Plus include, but are not limited to:
